Options if you would like to travel by public transport:

From Budapest there's a bus to Balassagyarmat once in every hour, it departs from "Újpest Városkapu" station (Metro 3 - Blue Line).

Distance from Budapest: 80 km. Journey time: approx. 2 hours.

There are also trains from Budapest, both from Budapest West and the East Railway Stations  via either Vác or Aszód.  Journey time: 2,5-3 hours. (not recommended)
