The rendering of religious, cultural and historical heritage into public property, the development of a Jewish collection and exhibition hall

Jewish orthodox cemetery of Balassagyarmat (The first jewish cemetery declared a historic monument in Hungary)

Our cemetery contains more than 3400 tombstones even from the 18th century, we have hundreds of Cohen and Levi stones as well. In every year we have a lot of visitors, relatives from all over the world, searching for their ancestors.

Some of the Cohen stones

(you can see the hands, which give blessings):

There are also some stones , in which we can see hands holding each other. That is intended to simbolize the joining of forces , belonging to the Chevra Kadisha ("Holy Society" - burial society):

Some of the Levi stones

(on which you can see the jug, which was used to spill water on their hands):

Some of the more interesting graves in the cemetery:

But the cemetery also has whole families burried in it. Sometimes we manage to restore a family tree too. Here you can see an example:

Ilovsky Ármin, who was a member of the local advisory board -in the early 20th century-, and who also had one of the biggest barnyards of Nógrád county.
